Fix Your Rejected KDP Cover

The most common reasons are a cover file whose page size does not match the size KDP calculates from your trim size, page count and paper type; missing bleed; artwork or text too close to the trim; text on the spine of a book with too few pages; and images below 300 DPI. This tool measures the first two exactly, calculates the spine, and draws the safe zones and the suggested barcode area over your artwork so you can check the rest.

Full-wrap width is 0.125 in bleed + back cover width + spine width + front cover width + 0.125 in bleed; height is trim height + 0.25 in. The spine is your page count multiplied by KDP's per-page thickness for the paper (for example 0.002252 in per page on white paper). A 6 × 9 in book with 200 white pages needs a 12.700 × 9.250 in cover. Enter your specs above and the tool shows the exact number.

KDP requires 0.125 in of extra artwork on every outside edge that gets trimmed off in printing. If your file is sized to the finished book, the bleed is missing. Bleed cannot be invented from nothing; the fix is to enlarge the artwork slightly so it reaches the bleed edge, which trims a sliver from the edges. You see exactly what would be cropped in the preview before you pay.

KDP only allows spine text on books with more than 79 pages. Below that the spine is too thin and the text would wrap onto the covers. The diagnostic warns you based on your page count. It cannot remove text from a flattened file; do that in your design tool.

Effective DPI is your image's pixels divided by the cover's physical width in inches. A 2,540-pixel-wide image on a 12.7 in cover is 200 DPI no matter what the file's metadata says. Resampling to a bigger pixel count does not add detail, so this tool never claims to. If your source is below 300 DPI it says so, and the honest fix is to re-export at a higher resolution.
